Title - The organic composition of C/2001 A2 (LINEAR). Search for heterogeneity within a comet nucleus

Summary - The nucleus of Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) split several times during its 2001 apparition. Evidence was found for chemical heterogeneity of 2 volatiles Methane & Formaldehyde. The Formaldehyde abundance, relative to water, decreased by a factor of nearly 4 between successive nights (9.5 and 10.5 July). The Methane abundance increased nearly a factor of 2 between July and August. These variations may reflect chemical heterogeneities within the nucleus and may be related to the repeated outburst events C/2001 A2 underwent during its apparition. Clearly, it is important to study parent volatiles over a wide range of heliocentric distances and to observe comets both before and after any outburst or disruption events. Snapshots of nuclear ice composition may not give us a comprehensive picture of the chemical composition of these primitive bodies.

Summary - Analysis of the visual light curve and fragmentation sequence of comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) shows a strong temporal correlation between the onset of outbursts and separation of companion nuclei. This scenario conforms to Sekanina's conceptual model for the release of sizable fragments of an inert dust mantle from the nucleus surface : an outburst is triggered as some of the mass rapidly disintegrates into fine dust.

Summary - Comet C/2001 A2 experienced several splitting events during its 2001 perihelion passage. The first break-up event was observed in March 2001 (IAUC 7616). In this paper we report the first results of our extensive imaging and spectroscopic monitoring campaign with ESO telescopes over several weeks before and after the perihelion passage on May 25 2001.
