By - Silvia Protopapa et al, 2021 (Michael Kelley)

Summary - 46P / Wirtanen is a small short-period comet with a current orbital period of 5.4 years & estimated diameter of 1.2 km. In December 2019, an outburst of the comet was captured in substantial detail by the TESS space telescope. Water-ice spectral signature was missing in the observations, taken around perihelion and closest approach to Earth. The data spans a range of heliocentric distance from 1.1 au inbound, to 1.05 au near perihelion, and back to 1.1 au outbound. Coma is composed of porous refractory aggregates spanning 1.1–100 μm in diameter. An upper limit of 1.4% in water-ice abundance is estimated.

Although Wirtanen came closest to Earth on Dec 16, 2018, the outburst occurred earlier in its approach, beginning on Sept 26, 2018. The initial brightening of the outburst occurred in 2 distinct phases, with an hour-long flash followed by a more gradual second stage that continued to grow brighter for another 8 hours. After reaching peak brightness, the comet faded gradually over a period of more than 2 weeks.
